Product Description
Zero Tolerance and custom knifemaker Todd Rexford join forces to produce the Zero Tolerance 0801. It starts with a blade of ELMAX powdered steel. ELMAX enables ZT to produce a blade with a razor edge, excellent edge retention, strength and toughness. A stonewashed blade finish hides hard-use scratches and makes maintenance easier. The 0801 handle is lightweight and durable titanium with machined grooves for a secure grip-and a great look. The titanium handle features a secure frame lock. The blade deploys using the built-in flipper. Just pull back on the flipper and the razor-sharp ELMAX blade rotates out of the handle on ZT's glass-smooth KVT ball-bearing system. No springs required; just simple, one-handed opening. Easy. The 0801 pocketclip is designed for deep carry and is reversible for left- or right-handed carry. Decorative pivot hardware completes the 0801's handsome look. If you like the looks of all metal, all the time, the 0801 is the right choice. Made in the USA. Manual open, KVT ball-bearing system; Frame lock; Reversible (left/right), deep-carry clip; Steel: ELMAX, stonewashed finish; Handle: Titanium; Blade Length: 3.5 in. (8.9 cm); Closed Length: 4.7 in. (11.9 cm); Overall Length: 8.2 in. (20.8 cm); Weight: 5.8 oz. (164.4 g).

Without the removable and relocatable pocket clip, the closed knife is 1/2 inch thick, 1.4 inches wide, and 4.7 inches long (12.7 x 35.7 x 119.6 mm). The weight with the clip is 6.0 oz or 170 g. Opened, the knife is 8 1/4 inches (210 mm) long. It is neither small nor light, but it has a good feel in the hand.
Out of the box it is sharp and needed no touchup of the blade. There are fine grinding marks on the edge, but I elected not to polish the edge as it cuts so well as is.
The knife snaps open by pulling a knurled lever (flipper) on the back of the blade. This rotates the blade out on a very smooth pivot bearing until it locks in place (an audible click) with a steel re-enforced lock. There is no play of the blade in the handle once it is locked in place. Closing the knife is not as swift as opening it and requires pressing the titanium frame lock hard enough to release the blade, then fold to close. Both opening and closing can be done with one hand. This should be done quite carefully, of course. Closing the knife with one hand is relatively safe as the lock bar must be pressed using the thumb close to the blade, and the protruding flipper lever at the base of the blade prevents the blade from closing on your thumb.
The titanium handle is nice and easy to grip. It is grooved for a better hold, but retains its clean lines.
Each knife is individually numbered, marked by laser engraving.
The construction is strong and operation is smooth.
I do not collect knives, and I do not use for self-defense: I will be using the knife in a saltwater application cutting heavy Kevlar re-enforced cable jacketing, so at a later date I will add information about the durability and corrosion resistance. Preliminary results are encouraging: I can easily cut through kevlar re-enforced cable jacketing by pressing and rocking only. No slicing is necessary: this gives me the control I need to cut to the correct depth. After repeated radial and axial cuts through thick 14 mm cable jacket, the blade shows no perceivable dulling and there are no markings or wear on the blade. The last cuts are as easy and precise as the first. Cuts through copper conductors are also quick and clean. Cheaper knives invariably fail by quickly losing their edge in this application. The advantage of the ELMAX blade seems to be in both the sturdy construction and the hardness of the material.
Although the knife has great looks, it is rugged enough for real work.
We tried ordering twice from two different vendors on Amazon. The first could not get stock, the second thought they were in stock, but were mistaken and credited my account. I finally had success on the third try, but I called to verify stock and pricing. I suggest you do the same, as this seems to be a hard to find item.
On the con side, I don't find the handle to be very attractive. Although I don't find it ugly either - just meh. I think it would be more attractive if the hardware screws, standoffs and pivot were silver instead of black, but that is a personal preference. Also, Zero Tolerance put a lot of writing on the blade which I am not crazy about either.
Overall, I am ecstatic with the build quality and performance of this knife. I bought it on Amazon for $192. I think that is a small price to pay for a knife that will last a lifetime.
Thank you and have a great day.
I bought the knife because I had read about the El Max steel with seemingly disparate characteristics of toughness, hardness, and easy sharpening. Holding the knife under a florescent light, the grain of the steel emerges: really weird. It was very sharp on delivery.
I own another flipper: the ZT 0350. The 0350 flipping action is easy and smooth, whereas the 0801 is sort of clunky. The 0350 is totally ambidextrous and handles better than the 0801. The 0801 is a work of art, has a bigger blade, and feels more substantial
Both the 0350 and 0801 are heavy enough to drill a hole in my pocket. I have no need to own either. I just like knives for the sake of owning knives.
I just realized that the 0801 is slightly too long to be legal in Nebraska, where knives are regulated and guns are not. If I get arrested, I'll blame the 0801.
