A Cut Above the Rest

Dominating the everyday carry, folding pocket knife market, Kershaw creates high-quality, high-performance, exceptional, working tools and knives affordable to all consumers. Kershaw always chooses appropriate, top notch materials and is dedicated to intensive craftsmanship of hardworking pocketknives, hunting knives, or special collectors’ editions. Kershaw’s advanced technology and innovative design combine to create solid, crafted, reliable knives users are proud to carry.

High-Performance Steel

A budget friendly, reliable, top-of-the-line Chinese produced steel, 8Cr13MoV steel has carbon and slightly less nickel for hardness and edge retention. Kershaw’s precision heat treated 8Cr13MoV steel strongly takes and holds an edge and offers wear resistance that can withstand damage from both abrasive and adhesive wear. 8Cr13MoV is a value blade steel featuring high performing characteristics.

Attractive Blade Finish

Kershaw’s Bead-Blasted finish enhances a knife’s aesthetics and complements its end-use. The high-tech finish is achieved by applying a mixture of fine media onto the blade’s steel under high pressure, creating a smooth, non-reflective matte surface. Fine media includes glass and aluminum oxide beads that allow color variation and optimal performance results for an overall stunning effect.

Fast Deployment

The classic way to open a knife, manual action knives use a thumb hole, thumb stud or built-in flipper to safely deploy the blade. Holding the knife level at 90o angle, quickly and smoothly flick the wrist to maneuver the blade out of the handle. Place fingers along handle scales and apply pressure inward on the blade with the thumb. Manual systems do not employ mechanical assist to open a knife.

Secure Locking System

With two steel plates, or liners, on the inside of each handle scale, the liner locking system safely secures the blade open and prevents unwanted blade closure. The lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent closure, and angles or is bent towards the blade tang creating a bias locked position. Apply manual force to move the lockbar to the side and fold the blade back into the handle.

Additional Features

Manual Flipper

Flippers on manual-open knives require user to push with quick strength until blade deploys. Some manual flippers disappear when blade deploys, others become a finger guard. Manual flippers appeal to inexperienced users as well as experienced users who prefer a classic, old-style opening. In both cases, ambidextrous flipper works as index finger applies pressure while closed knife sits in palm.

Durable Handle

Very tough, able to take heavy-duty hard use, and versatile, glass-filled nylon handle material is a nylon synthetic polymer reinforced with glass threads for increased strength. Glass-filled nylon has incredible stiffness for a secure and stable grip, great ability to withstand heat, and dimensional stability combined with excellent wear resistance.

Convenient Pocketclip

Kershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. A pocketclip with tip-down carry is positioned so the closed knife carries in the pocket with the tip of its blade pointed down. A reversible tip-up or tip-down pocketclip allows user to change tip position.

I have carried and used this knife now for the last few years and it get almost daily use. The knife is well built and does its job well. Having a screwdriver on hand is SO nice. You don't really realize how many times you need a screwdriver until you have this knife and can just use the built in screwdriver without having to go get a screwdriver...or on a few occasions I didn't have access to a screwdriver. I have bought Kershaw knives for years and this one keeps up the Kershaw quality image well.

I'll admit the Kershaw Select Fire knife/multi-tool is a little bulkier and heavier than I was expecting, but I've gotten used to it quickly. The blade out-of-the-box is wicked-sharp and seems to be holding an edge well, plus it's of a size big enough for serious cutting. Love how easy it is to open one-handed, and I have very small hands. Plus the bit/screwdriver part is amazingly useful and well-constructed. One thing I like is unlike my other multitool, a Leatherman Wave, which I use for more serious projects, the Select Fire takes standard hex bits. I'm already thinking about exchanging the included smaller Phillips bit for a torx. Even if not, as long as I have the extra bits with me or in my toolbox, I won't have to go hunting for a bit-driver for simple jobs.

My previous everyday carry-knife used to be a Leatherman Juice, but honestly besides the knife, the only other tools on it I needed often were the screwdrivers -- and those were a total bear to open, even with regular lubrication. I suspect the joints just get tighter over time, but it's so bad now, I need a screwdriver just to get the Juice's screwdriver bits out.

I honestly don't know what the longer-term durability will be for this Kershaw, but the low price (which I got as part of a Lightning Deal here, along with free Prime shipping) simply could not be beat. Even if it only lasts a few years, I'll likely get more daily use out of it than all my other knives and multitools combined.

(Update: 1/27/13: The more I've carried this knife, the more indispensable it's become. We moved in the last couple of months, and having this knife with me at all times has been a total life-saver. "Oh, I need a screwdriver to take apart and/or assemble this... no problem!" If I lost it, I'd absolutely buy a replacement ASAP. Oh, and by the way? That slot where the bit-holder fits when closed works well as a bottle opener.)

(Update 11/14/14: I still have the same knife, and still carry it every day, usually tucked into the front pocket of my jeans. The blade has needed sharpening a few times over the nearly two years I've owned the Kershaw 1920 Select Fire Multi-Tool, and the bits look just a tad tarnished, probably from perspiration -- but everything still works. By the way, when the hinge is properly lubricated, I have had no trouble at all opening the blade one-handed. The screw driver bits have come in handy more times than I can count, and even the hex bit holder can be used on appropriately sized nuts. Easily the best sub-twenty buck knife I've ever owned and if I ever lose it, I'll buy another. Fortunately, it's never been more than occasionally misplacing it. It's true, I do wish Kershaw had a slightly sturdier model available, and I'd gladly pay more for it if they did. But I've never regretted buying this one.)

Its a good quality blade and the screwdriver tool is very handy. The main drawback is it is not very easy to flip open unlike many other knives I have. Also my other Kershaw blades were made in USA but this was made in China. Kershaw is supposed to be a fully American company so I am disappointed in this decision.

I have owned two of these - except both of mine were / are partially-serrated. I bought my first one in the early 2010's, and it traveled with me all over the country, and it was an essential "bit of kit" as they say. When I went to Vegas with my Father-in-law, we leaned against a rail that was slightly loose - I pulled out my Select Fire slipped in a Phillips bit, and tightened the rail real quick. He was so impressed with it that I bought him one that he still carries almost daily to this day. Mine wore out, so I bought a replacement in the mid-2010's. I'm really bad about leaving things in my pockets - the "new" one ended up taking a swim with me in the ocean - TWICE, over a three year period. It's old, and a little rusty for having been in the ocean TWICE, but it's still holding up well circa March 2023. My son, who is a mechanic now, recently commented on how he never realized how cool my knife is - I bought him one for his birthday, and now HE carries it and uses it daily. My only gripe is that you can no longer get the partially-serrated version. Excellent knife, excellent value. Thank you for such a great product. Tip: If you need more than Phillips and Standard, either pull bits from one of your other bit kits, or get a small bit kit to keep in your pocket. For example, I carried a T-6 bit in the knife for a couple of years, because, at that time, I ended up repairing a lot of cell phones (not my career, it just ended up that way). With this knife and a pair of micro-pliers in my pocket, I could disassemble, assemble, or repair just about anything electronic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Schönes Messer

4.0 out of 5 stars Innovatives Konzept, tolle Umsetzung, feines Messer.
