Awesome crossbow!
Glad I went with majority reviews (positive) I found on Amazon before deciding to purchase the Recruit. A small handful of poor reviews of "broken strings" and "broken limbs" after the first couple of shots had me a little nervous. After spending the afternoon sighting in and shooting this little beast, I'm 100% sold!! I shot the Recruit easily over 100 times today, keeping the track lubed with Scorpion Venom and the string and cable with the wax Barnett includes with the crossbow. Flawless from the first shot to the last shot, zero issues, strings, cables and limbs didn't blow up and look like brand new still. I'd have to believe most, if not all of the negative reviews came from operator error, bolt not seated correctly, no lube, no wax etc... I did opt to not use the carbon bolts that came with it, and replaced them with a little heavier bolt, the 457gr Carbon Express GameSlayers, I also replaced the red dot sight with a 4x Pursuit crossbow scope for a little better optic and expected accuracy beyond 20yds. I'm amazed with the accuracy from a crossbow in this price range, the plex recticle with the GameSlayer bolt combination worked great at 20yd-30yd-40yd..I haven't had the chance to stretch it out past 40yds yet, but have all the faith in the world with this combination after today and expect equally as good results. Basically shooting the crossbow off my trucks hard tonneau cover with a bipod mounted on the little hammer had me actually nervous I was going hit and ruin arrows at 40yds the groups were so tight. Job well done Barnett,..great price on a great crossbow.

Got this from the Amazon Warehouse for my son who is turning 13 and I was "less than pleased" when it arrived in pieces. Of pieces! It was described as "used in Very Good condition". It was missing the string, bolts, and other items. I opened the box to find it's contents crammed inside as one might stuff a garbage bin.

But thankfully there's more to the story....I did an online chat session with an Amazon Rep and He issued a call tag to pick up the mess of a "crossbow" that the warehouse sent, and had a NEW replacement sent out 1 day shipping! Customer service REALLY stepped it up on this one. As some of you know, Amazon Warehouse Deals can REALLY drop the ball sometimes. But I, and my son, are sure pleased with the outcome on this occasion. Thanks Amazon Customer Service!

Ok, so here's the scoop.....Up front, the Barnett Recruit is, without a doubt, one of the best crossbow bargains of all time. And I am being somewhat conservative here. Of course time will tell how she holds up over the long haul, but as one familiar with crossbows/manufacturers and their history, I can tell you that this one performs very well for the money. At this moment, people are buying el cheapo bargain crossbows for only fifty bucks or so less than this well engineered wonder! What you get for 250 bucks is quite probably, the best high tech, miniaturized, light weight bolt thrower on the planet. We LOVE the balance, the light weight, (6.5lbs) the VERY short width (12" drawn/18" undrawn!) and at only 130lb draw weight It shoots over 300fps and out performs my 150lb draw, 8.5lb medieval giant war club of a crossbow, handily. It's even got upper and lower picatinny rails. Great for a foregrip and other fun add ons. We are burying the 20" carbon arrows into a stacked foam target up to the fletching, and sometimes the back end of the bolt disappears into the target.....and this is from forty yards out! With performance like this from such a small, light weight package, who needs the "gravitically challenged" over sized monsters of yesteryear? One could carry this thing all day and forget it's there. No snagging it on every branch that comes along. It sports an aluminum riser and Delrin (or similar plastic) rail, which is a good thing as the plastic's inherent qualities mimic those of Teflon, for less friction on the serving and rail at launch. Nearly every detail is well thought out and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again. In fact, I am seriously thinking of getting one of my own! I wouldn't hesitate to hunt ANY of North America's big game species with it.

Barnett clearly had their collective thinking cap on for this project. And it's obvious that they are hoping to make a life long impression on new shooters. This is the one to win 'em over. Look out Crossbow Community.....Barnett is Legacy Minded and is coming for your children!

Truly, a few qualitative changes (longer draw stroke, higher draw weight, better, ie. longer, beefier stock extension etc.) and this could be "the" revolution in crossbows.

Rebadge it, market it to veteran hunters and call it.....

The Wolverine.

This crossbow works great I had no issue sighting in the scope at 20, 30, and 40 yards ( Although it took 79 clicks up to sight it in). I am replacing the item due to the quiver or bottom rail damaged. Even with the quiver tightened in several different positions it still falls off. Despite this very minor issue the crossbow shoot very small groups and has A LOT of power. I would 100% recommend and have to my friends who are interested in hunting archery. This bow is a beginner and intermediate level crossbow. I cannot say 100% that the crossbow would be for professionals but I do not see a reason why it couldn't be used for all level hunters. pulling the string back is effortless and the safety and trigger mechanisms function flawlessly. The non magnified 3 dot red/green scope is ideal for shot range shooting ( 40 yards or less) if your looking to reach out much further a new scope will be needed. The attachment points for a harness/sling are placed in very ideal locations and provide a secure attachment for a variety of crossbow or rifle slings with swivel style clips. Overall I will rate this crossbow at a 90/100= A- very affordable, very user friendly and very powerful. The minor Manufacturing defects has swayed my score from a 94/100. If your looking to start hunting with a crossbow and are in the market for one this would be a very good crossbow to start with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Price! GREAT BOW!!!

What a great little bow!!! I do a lot of hunting, I mean ALOT! I am the owner/founder of Team Caliber Hunting and I bought this crossbow for late season deer hunts.

I mostly shoot my Hoyt compound bow but on those super cold late season hunts it is great to have a nice light, compact and quick crossbow. Well look no farther this is it!!

I really was not expecting much for a $300 crossbow. I mean I knew it was going to be a "budget" bow from Barnett but, when I got it all unpacked and assembled ( which is super easy and takes around 10mins ) I took the Barnett Recruit to my range out back of the house, set it up on a shooting rest, clicked the Red Dot scope on and with in 4 shots I was touching the bullseye! I am more than happy with the so called "budget" bow. My honest opinion is that this crossbow from Barnett is not a budget bow but rather a well made, light, compact and pretty quiet bow that will not brake the bank.

It is a great package for a good price. I am glad I bought it.

Hope this helps anyone sitting on the fence,
Cheers,
James

It was very easy to set up. It took approximately 10-15 shots total to zero it in to bulls eye on the target. The up/down worked perfectly on the scope. There is no magnification on the scope, but for the price I see why. Anyhow, scope worked fine for target shooting and hunting. I shot my buck at 25 yards and the arrow went straight through him. Excellent penetration and a quick/clean kill. Dollar for dollar, you can’t beat this crossbow. I got it on sale and I am very satisfied with the price and quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recruit cross bow
Reviewed in Canada on April 29, 2014
This bow just arrived yesterday. Was quick time between purchase and delivery. Out of the box u can put it together in under 10 min and sights in easily. I have never shot a crossbow before and within half hour I was hitting centre mass at 100 yards on a bag target with really decent grouping. The bow is very light weight and easy to arm. So as far as this crossbow goes for me as a beginner with a crossbow I give it a big thumbs up
