Attractive Blade FinishWhen a knife design requires a lighter blade to highlight the steel, Kershaw often applies a satin finish. Satin finishes, whether machine-generated or otherwise, leave faint patterns of lines on the steel, and while they sand away the steel’s brightness, they do not remove it as completely as do other finishes. A satin finish also helps reduce evidence of stains and scratches on the blade. Depending on the knife’s design, Kershaw’s non-reflective stonewashed finish may be either pronounced or subtle, but in both cases, it transforms the blade by creating a fade-resistant, scuffed look that hides smudges and fingerprints. A stonewashed finish, achieved by tumbling a blade with ceramic stones, enhances a blade’s rugged appearance as well as its indestructibility during field use. |
Fast DeploymentUsing 'caged' ball bearings for smooth blade deployment and overcoming stronger knife detent, the KVT Ball-Bearing Opening System makes one-handed knife opening fast and easy without the need of a mechanical assist. Ball-bearings surround and freely rotate around the pivot. When the user pulls back on the flipper, the blade rotates out of the handle as the ball bearings roll into place. |
Secure Locking SystemKershaw’s frame lock design makes knives safer, securer, sturdier and quicker for one-handed blade deployment. The knife handle, or frame, has two metal plates on either side of the blade, and when open, the lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent blade closure. To close the knife blade, push the frame to the side to unlock the blade and fold the blade back into the handle. |

One-Handed FlipperFlippers on manual-open knives require user to push with quick strength until blade deploys. Some manual flippers disappear when blade deploys, others become a finger guard. Manual flippers appeal to inexperienced users as well as experienced users who prefer a classic, old-style opening. In both cases, ambidextrous flipper works as index finger applies pressure while closed knife sits in palm. |
Durable HandleA reinforced polymer of thin strands of carbon tightly woven, carbon fiber is tremendously strong yet lightweight. Strong weaves of bonded carbon atoms are used to compose carbon fiber in both Kershaw high-end knife handles and Zero Tolerance premium materials. With solid strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, carbon fiber is an excellent, high-performing, high-quality knife handle. Titanium is a lightweight metal alloy and it offers excellent corrosion resistance. Heavier than aluminum but still lightweight and strong, titanium is a very sturdy material often used in knife handles, locking liners, or as a blade coating to enhance performance. Titanium is a sleek, stylish, premium material that’s excellent for the ideal everyday carry. |
Convenient PocketclipKershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. A pocketclip with tip-up carry is positioned so the closed knife carries in the pocket with the tip of its blade pointed upwards. A reversible tip-up or tip-down pocketclip allows user to change tip position. |

Pros:
- The quality is superb. I mean really superb. The fit and finish is fantastic.
- The deployment (after about 200+ flips) is incredible. The blade flies open. It rockets past the 0566 which is assisted. I'm still amazed out how fast this knife deploys for a manual flipper.
- The looks are amazing. I absolutely love the design.
- Even though it's a very large knife, it fits my hands very well and very comfortably.
- I can carry this in dress slacks, blue jeans, cargo shorts, inside my waistband, etc. Supper easy to carry.
- Yes it can be an EDC knife even though it's over 5" long! It's not uncomfortable in your pocket.
- The lockup is absolutely, without a doubt, the most solid lockup i have ever experienced. The ZT 0566 was good, but not this good! and benchmades and spyderco's are great, but not this great. It's a huge knife, easy to get the leverage to flex and rock the blade to feel some slack but there is none.
- The frame is very sturdy, even through there are only two standoffs at the back of the knife. There is very little flex.
- The carbon fiber does provide some nice (yet subtle) traction.
- The weight!! This is a light-weight knife for it's size.
Cons:
- The blade was not what i would call sharp. The grind was about 20* on one side and probably 30* on the other side. I had to reprofile the whole blade in order to sharpened in 20* on each side with my sharpmaker.
- The blade is long and you can cut yourself on the tip of the knife with it closed. I have not done this, but I have felt the tip several times when reaching for the knife closed. Not a deal breaker for me, but it is possible to cut yourself.
- The top-back corner of the carbon fiber was sharp and dug into my palm when flipping. It was machined perfectly but was just uncomfortable so i took some fine sandpaper and after a few passes it rounded the corner just enough.
- The pocket clip is just dumb. I put a pocket clip from my kershaw Camber on the knife for the time being. This allows for a slightly deeper ride in the pocket so that the knife just disappears all together.
- There is some rough scratching/ grinding against the blade and lockbar (once the detent ball drops off and right before the lockbar clicks into place). After a few hundred (okay, probably a few thousand at this point) flips, the grinding is about gone. It doesn't seem to affect performance, and it's only for about an 1/8" of travel or so. I think this is just due to the lockbar insert not being polished and it drags the blade for just a bit.
- It's so long in my pocket that if i have keys in the same pocket they hit each other. I've never had this problem before so it makes me reconsider how i carry my phone/keys/etc.
- Price, yep - it's expensive.
Wishlist:
- Make this same exact knife the size of the ZT 0450. I'm not into all metal/titanium knifes. So give me the ZT 0450 with a CF scale or a miniature version of this knife and i'll be all over it.
Overall:
I really like this knife. Once i sharpened the blade with an edge pro, the put a fine 40* inclusive edge on it with a sharpmaker ultra fine stones, followed by stropping, the blade performs at a much higher (and expected) level. It's supper fun to flips and look at. I plan to use it as an EDC and it's a great food prep and steak knife replacement.
If i had to do it over again i probably would have bought the ZT 0562CF which is a little bit shorter and the grind looks to be better for slicing. The 0452CF is just long enough that i can't carry keys and the knife in the same pocket and that bothers me a little. However, i'm still going to carry it!
Is it worth the money? I have no idea, probably not, but the quality is much higher than all of the $130-$150 knives i own so i guess you do get what you pay for!
I've included a picture of this against a Benchmade Sequel 707 which is truly a perfect EDC knife (3" blade). Big difference in size!

10/2016 Update: I still love the size, the weight, the materials, the asthetics, but there's one gripe. The tip of the blade is too close to the end of the handle when closed. If you press the pad of your finger down on the butt end of the knife when closed, it will scratch your finger. Even worse, when it was clipped into my pocket, one time I tried to get something out of the pocket. I tried to push past it and the webbing between my thumb and forefinger caught the gap between the scales and because the blade tip is so close to the end, it neatly cut my handed and nearly ruined a pair of pants with blood. This is a design flaw unique to the 0452 because I have the 0450 zdp and the tip is back 1mm.
