Product Description

Product Description

Try the Trident Tanto once and you’ll never carry that other brand’s blade again. That’s our challenge to you. Give it a push on either Thumbstud and the 3.75” blade jumps from the handle as if coiled and ready to strike. That’s thanks to SOG Assisted Technology (S.A.T.), a system of opposing high-tension coils that propels the blade open instantly once you give it a flick.

Blending elements from the Bowie, Tomcat, SEAL Pup, and Flash Series knives, SOG Specialty Knives and Tools has created a new breed of folding knife: the TF-7 Trident knife with straight blade, tanto edge, and black TiNi coating. Designed for use by Navy SEALs, the TF-7 features SOG's grooved handle, which allows you to cut heavy cord and cable without having to open the specially designed blade. The TF-7's blade is easy to open and features Arc-Actuator technology, which helps the blade lock more strongly and release more easily.

SOG Assisted Technology Increases Speed, Safety, and Usability
Fast, safe, single-handed opening makes SOG Trident Series knives incredibly easy to handle in a wide variety of situations. When you go to unfold the TF-7's blade, SOG's patented S.A.T. (SOG Assisted Technology) takes over. High-tension coil springs propel the blade open, so you can easily access it with just one hand.

S.A.T. knives offer security and peace of mind with their locking mechanisms that are stronger, more reliable, and easier to access than other knives'. For Trident Series knives, this means the blade is held in place with a reliable piston lock that can be quickly released with a sliding button. An additional safety lock offers extra security when the blade is closed, and for easy reference, the lock switch shows red when the knife is ready to be opened.

Cryogenic Heat Treatment and TiNi Coating Guarantee a Sharp, Durable Blade
The TF-7 offers a full, 3.75-inch, AUS8 stainless steel blade that has undergone SOG's patented Cryogenic Heat Treatment process, which ensures that this blade will stay sharp over the long haul. This intensive process takes more than 48 hours and involves slowly reducing the blade's temperature to less than -300 degrees Fahrenheit, then slowly heating the blade to room temperature. The stress created by this process strengthens the steel on an atomic level and increases the blade's overall durability and edge retention.

In addition to having undergone the Cryogenic Heat Treatment Process, this knife is coated in proprietary titanium nitride (TiNi), of the toughest coatings that can be applied to steel. TiNi boasts extreme hardness, is exceptionally scratch and peel resistant, helps increase steel's longevity, and ensures low reflectivity.

Ergonomic, Lightweight Design Ensures Comfortable Use
Even if your blade is sharp, it's hard to make precise cuts if your knife doesn't fit comfortably in your hand. That's why this knife's handle is ergonomically contoured. Crafted from tough, glass-reinforced Zytel, the handle is well-balanced and features SOG's unique Digi-Grip texturing, a feature that gives you gripping power where you need it most. Additionally, the grooved handle allows you to cut heavy cord and cable without having to open the blade.

At just 3.6 ounces, this folding knife is lightweight and easy to carry. A reversible, bayonet-mounted clip extends from the back of the handle, allowing the knife to sit low in your pocket for the most discreet carry possible. The removable clip is easily switched for right/left hand-carry.

This knife is backed by a lifetime warranty that protects against defects in manufacturing and materials.

Loving it so far
I decided that being a gun owner and carrier I wanted protection in places my firearm cannot go. So I decided to purchase a knife. After much careful consideration and reading, I purchased the SOG TF-7 Trident with TiNi finish (as seen here) from Amazon. I don't have much experience with knives but I did purchase a Gerber "Instant" from their "Essentials" series at the local Dick's Sporting Goods for 42 bills after tax. After some very light tasks with the Gerber, I noticed the blade had dented and lost its' edge almost immediately after light tasks. That was very unacceptable for me. In the end, the Gerber Instant is labeled as MADE IN CHINA. I'm an American, and I prefer to buy American. This TF-7 Trident is labeled on the box as MADE IN THE USA! That was a big plus to me as a buyer. I have also tested the cutting abilities of the Trident in a few ways, and it is with lack of a better term "Ultra Super Mega Hella SHARP"! For the first time in my life I am able to cut things with Zero-Effort. Just buy it while you can. Because I'm going to buy another one (as a Spare) and refer everybody I know & care about to buy one of these. The AUS8 steel blade is sharp, and durable so thus far remains sharp.

I previously owned an early production SOG Trident, which for some reason I never really warmed to, it had a few issues. However, I recently bought this one with the Tiger Stripe finish, and it's abundantly clear that SOG has listened to the forum criticisms and done some significant quality control enhancements! The new production Tridents are absolutely first rate. All of the best features are retained: it's extremely light, has a great blade shape, outstanding pocket clip, great ergonomics, a large lanyard hole, and comes out of the box RAZOR sharp. The Tiger Stripe coloration looks AWESOME, you'll love it. The lockup wiggle that many people complained about (including me on my early model) has been eliminated, it feels rock solid and is easily adjusted. Deployment is lightning fast and extremely reliable, and stays that way even if the knife is muddy, dusty, or covered in oil (I've had it in all of those situations, and it continued to perform flawlessly.) The blade is outstanding; SOG's AUS-8 steel has a great heat treatment that makes it perform on par with more exotic steels. In terms of rust resistance, it is pretty good, the TINI Coating helps but I haven't had any issues as long as you rinse it after extended salt exposure (which is frequent for me). There are some features that are much maligned on this knife by many, but that I love, especially if you consider the requirements and environments for which this knife was designed! A lot of people don't like the fact that there are no full steel liners. I spend a lot of time on boats and in salt water environments, often in tropical locations in Central and South America as well as the Pacific Islands. This makes the lack of steel liners actually a plus; the strength of the Zytel handles is more than adequate, and provides insulation from cold as well as electrical shock when or if you have to cut wires (again, as a maritime or military user, these things matter.) The lack of liners also makes this knife exceptionally easy to maintain. While not a flow through design, there are no places for water to "hide" and form rust. Just rinse the knife out, blow it out with compressed air or leave it in the sun, slap a bit of oil in the pivot area and you're good to go, no disassembly needed. Next, the notorious line cutter. Most find it superfluous; I love it! First off, they've made a subtle change that makes it far more effective than early models. On my early production Trident, the groove has straight sides. This means that you have to cut at EXACTLY a right angle, making it marginally effective at best. On the newer models, the base of the groove is angled, so that when you put something in it it will "gather" the material into the blade, making it a VERY effective line cutter. It's not as good as a dedicated line cutter, but it works much better in practice than many reviews would like you to think. It's nice in situations where you don't want to flip out the blade (rubber boats, climbing, wearing heavy gloves on a fishing boat, in crowds etc.) And it will cut through pretty tough materials; I've used the groove cutter on zip ties, electrical wiring, plastic tubing, webbing, and others. Take care, it will dull that portion of of the blade over time, but honestly I don't use it too much so it hasn't upped the regular sharpening schedule of this knife for me. Anyways, in summary, I'd highly recommend this knife, it's light, fast, very good looking, and effective for almost any role.

These knives are workhorses. I have used SOG Trident Tantos for probably at least five years now. Lost one and ended up just buying another, because I couldn't find anything I liked better - especially not at this price!
    • I like the tanto profile because I find it easier to resharpen and rehone. I don't use it for skinning (I have a dedicated fixed-blade for that), so not having a belly on the knife doesn't bother me.
    • This knife is primarily used to open boxes and such, and occasionally to cut food items, and the tanto shape performs those functions just fine. However, if it were ever pressed into defensive use, then the tanto shape is (imo) far superior to the other options available.
    • Personally, I find the lock feature annoying. On both the knives I've had, the lock has an annoying tendency to migrate from safety-off to safety-on while in my pocket. I understand the manufacturer is protecting themselves from lawsuits and what not with these features, but I find it to be a nuisance. It probably voids warranties, but my solution is to take the knife apart, epoxy the safety lever into safety-off position, give it time to cure, and then reassemble the knife. In easily over 1,000 days of carrying these knives, I have never once experienced the knife accidentally deploying while inside my pocket. Or anywhere else, for that matter - daypacks, travel bags, storage, anything. The safety lever has never accidentally gone from safety-on to safety-off, but has gone the other way many many times. So I just give it a permanent fix and call it good.
    • It would be nice if these knives came from the factory with a user-adjustable spring tension on the lock feature. That would be just outstanding.
    • The synthetic handle is nicely textured and quite tactile without feeling like you're trying to grip a cheese grater. The handle is a little longer than most people's hands are wide, so there is plenty of real estate for getting a nice solid hold on the knife. I remember it seemed very long at first, almost unnecessarily long, but after I got used to it, I really liked it. I'm a fan of knives that fill my hand in use; this knife does it, and many others do not.

Nice smooth opening mechanism, minimal blade travel for an assisted opener and pleasing design. It arrived quite blunt, but the fairly good steel took a more acceptable edge easily.

A good quality knife, but could be better value for money if was a bit less expensive.
