Product Description

Based on Rick's crave-worthy XM-18, the new ZT 0561 is one completely amazing knife. First, the blade. It's pure ELMAX powdered steel for the extreme edge retention, high strength, and toughness a hard-use knife demands. It rolls out of the handle on the KVT ball-bearing system so deployment is rapid and it's ready when you need it. The handle is 3-D machined G-10 on the front, and equally 3-D machined titanium on the back. A framelock with lockbar stabilizer ensures a rocksolid lockup every time. To ensure this big bear of a knife carries at a comfortable weight, ZT has skeletonized the liner and machined pockets in the titanium handle and framelock. And to top it all off, the 0561 is equipped with ZT's new deep-carry pocketclip. With flat dark earth front scale.

Designer folding knife of technical perfection and functional beauty (updated 5Jun2015)

Designer folding knife of technical perfection and functional beauty (updated 5Jun2015)
Well-known American knife designer Rick Hinderer teamed with ZT Knives to produce the ZT Zero Tolerance 0561 Hinderer Collaboration Folder — hence the "Hinderer Collaboration" of the product name. This knife is a marriage of great functional design; the highest quality materials, fit and finish; and the most exacting high standards of manufacture. It is a tool which expresses the finest American traditions of innovative design, and micron-level precision tool manufacturing. Not a rivet in sight: the titanium and G10 scales, and repositionable spring-steel clip, are all fixed with hex-drive screws. The blade pivots on ball-bearings — with no side-play. There is not one iota of superfluous decoration on this knife, yet it is an object of great beauty which exudes from the natural qualities of its component materials and uncompromising design and manufacture. The knife doesn't just look good: its high quality has tactile and audio feedback. Smooth one-handed opening with a firm press of the index finger on the blade flipper ends with a distinctive click of the liner lock; the texture and profile of the handle fit and feel right even in my large hand. The curved profile scales, although of totally different materials on each side (titanium and G10) both have a matching fish-scale or scalloped pattern which is attractive as well as an aid to grip. I have carried folding pocket knives as a general purpose tool since childhood in the Australian bush, and have owned a few other very well-made American folders with which to compare this knife. (An ornately engraved Buck Classic II and a remarkable Blackie Collins-designed BenchMark Rolox were favorite former possessions — both stolen!). For its practicality as a pocket tool-kit, my every-day carry knife for many years has been a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife Picnicker. I have always referred to this as my "journalists' model Swiss Army knife" because it has a corkscrew, a combined bottle-opener/screwdriver/staple remover, can opener/small screwdriver, and an awl/reamer useful for document filing, as well as a lock blade equally good for peeling fruit or taking newspaper cuttings, spring-steel tweezers, and a plastic toothpick. I once even used its screwdrivers to replace the headlining of a light aircraft that came loose jouncing around on a flight in a tropical thunderstorm. But it is merely a functional tool, in no way "a thing of beauty". Among single blade folding knives with no add-ons, I have never seen any finer expression of perfection than the ZT Zero Tolerance 0561 Hinderer Collaboration. It is both carriable and collectible. As befits such a well-made item, this is one of the few folding knives inscribed on the blade with individual sequential serial numbers. Right out of the box, this knife is razor-sharp with a beautifully honed double bevelled edge: it slices straight down a sheet of paper held in the hand. The edge on the Swedish powdered steel blade is so good that I will not risk ruining it ever by touching it with any sharpening device except one that has a jig to hold the exact angle, such as the Lansky or Tormek systems (both of which I'm fortunate to own). The manufacturer offers what is probably the best resharpening option of all: free lifetime sharpening at ZT Knives Tualitin, Oregon, facility. This free lifetime sharpening deal is set out in the owner leaflet: "you pay to ship it to us; we pay to ship it back to you". That is a pretty impressive statement of the manufacturer's pride and confidence in this knife. Safety is integral: thumb-operated for closing as recommended in the user leaflet, the liner lock cannot be released in such a way that the blade can close on fingers, because the projecting flipper acts as a stop until the thumb is moved out of the way. The photo gallery already here accurately shows the functions and quality of this very superior large folding knife. I have added some photos showing the ZT Zero Tolerance 0561 Hinderer Collaboration knife compared to three other high quality folding knives that I own: a smaller flipper design, the Spyderco Southard Folder G-10 Plain Edge Knife, and two multi-tool knives in the Victorinox Swiss Army range, the Swiss Army standard issue New Soldier's Knife model 56945, and the civilianized Picnicker, which has been my favorite everyday carry knife for 20 years. These photos show clearly that the ZT Hinderer is considerably larger, more ruggedly built, and more finely finished than many other common folding knives. I rate it even better in fit, finish and function than the also excellent Spyderco Southard Folder.

Wow! This thing is really put together.looks tuff, sophisticated and ready for anything. Has a nice heft also.not too heavy but feels like serious hardware. The shape of handle and texture of 3-D machined scales and jimping positively locks itself into my grasp.not a chance it might come loose even if wet, greasy or bloody. While i love the grip of the handle it is not quite as comfortable as i expected.the handle frame is a bit short top to bottom especially at the finger choil.its just not as hand filling as i hoped and there are a couple of "hot spots"or areas of increased preasure in my fairly large hands. Its nothing major and im sure I'll adjust to it. I guess i was expecting it to feel like a larger version of my similar Kershaw Cryo 2 which is also designed by Rick Hinderer. It is practically perfect.
The ZT 0561 is heavily built with a thick blade, titanium handle slabs and 3 massive build screws. The blade pivot is substantial and the ball bearings allow the blade to pivot with practically zero friction.be careful while closing.gravity alone sends the blade sailing.the first few times i opened it by the flipper i swore it was an assisted opener.very very nice. The detent holding the blade closed is very strong making opening via the thumbstuds very difficult. I can do it but it tears my thumb to shreds.and this is only real complaint i have. It seems ZT designed the thumbstuds as a blade stop not as lugs for opening and therefore are not optimized for opening. What??? Come on ZT.just put a heavy blade stop in the frame and give us usable thumbstuds on the blade. Especially for a tactical knife redundancy and operational flexibility are paramount. I didnt dock them a star in the ratings bc the rest of the knife is so good but this really disappointed me.
As far as the rest of the knife, all is great.it locks up w about 40% engagement depth which on a knife of this quality and blade/lock thickness is perfectly sufficient tho i prefer as close to 100% as possible on lesser knives. This is the latest generation and has the hardened steel insert on the end of the lockbar that contacts the blade tang. Wow!overengineered and overbuilt and i love it!
It locks like a bear trap regardless how slow or fast i open it and unlocks easily with the perfect amount of tension. And the incredible Elmax steel flat ground blade is lazer sharp.excellent. the pocket clip is strong and holds securely but i have a feeling the textured frame will eat pockets for lunch.
Overall i give it 95/100 points. As close to perfection as ive seen and highly recommended to anyone in need of a large tactical knife that could also work perfectly as an outdoorsmans field knife. Definitely one of the best on the market.

    Update- Dec 24,2015-

I decided to delete previous update and rewrite now that ive owned the knife a while and its thoroughly broken-in.

First off id like to say i do stand by my original review above but a few points i contended in my earlier update were a bit harsh and the main issue i complained about has since resolved itself.

This is a great, high quality folder. The ergonomics are very good but the heavy jimping can be uncomfortable in hard use situations unless wearing gloves. But for most other situations its just fine.very grippy, secure and reasonably comfortable.

The scathing review update about how impossible it was to deploy the blade via the thumbstuds was right on. The studs are sharp cornered and uncomfortable but it was the fact that gripping the knife to deploy with thumbstuds causes you to inadvertently apply pressure to the lockbar thereby effectively seizing the blade. The harder you try the harder you chew up your thumb and the blade remained safely tucked into the handle. It was horrible!
It WAS horrible. But somehow, apparently after an extended break-in period my knife has relented and now is perfectly capable of blade deployment via the thumbstuds. I guess the detent ball or its corresponding hole in the blade has smoothed out to the point it actually works now.
The knife is primarily designed as a flipper and it flips open with excellent action. But a tactical knife needs operational flexibility and should be able to deploy the blade through multiple means. Imagine trying to quickly get it into action in an emergency using the flipper with an injured index finger. A knife designed to protect your life needs to be flexible with redundant means of operation. ALL tacticals should be made this way. Imagine trying to quickly deploy the blade on a popular tactical with only a single sided thumbstud after receiving a debillitating injury to your dominant hand and having to swap to your non dominant hand. Without a stud on that side of the blade you are SOL! Get it?And this is why i complained so loudly about the 0561 and some other framelocks with the same problems.
But perhaps i should have been more patient since mine is now functioning very well with thumbstud opening. I did slightly round off the sharp corners tho.
Im not sure if all the knives will eventually work or if i just got lucky. I know there are tens of thousands of these out there with this problem. I can only suggest you continue working the action and hopefully yours will eventually give as well. So enough said about that.

The pivot action is superb as always.very smooth and solid without play of any kind. Whether by the flipper or the newly functional thumbstuds, the blade rockets out of the handle and slams home and securely locked in a blink of the eye. Excellent! Lockup remains solid as a bank vault without play and engagement depth is still holding strong at about 40%. Also excellent.
Ive worked this knife fairly hard and even have done a bit of chopping and have never experienced any lock rock, slip or inadvertent unlocking. Excellent again.
And it unlocks easily with moderate tension.I dont like how the blade quickly falls closed under its own weight when unlocked tho. I much prefer a pivot that is smooth and light but the blade stays put,yet closes easily under its own weight with just a shake or two. The ball bearing pivot system on this knife is great but it does have certain characteristics that i could do without. Call me old fashioned but i really prefer a well designed, high quality phosphor bronze washer system. The ZT 0561 still earns an excellent rating here however.
The blade detent still holds the blade closed with excellent force.no chance of it opening in pocket. Overall an excellent, strong, solid and beautifully functional action.

That massive blade with its thick dimension behind the edge grind has been extremely durable and damage resistant. And it slices remarkably well as long as i keep the edge sharp.
The Ellmax blade steel holds a pretty good edge and has proven tough as an anvil and extremely corrosion resistant. But inevitably it will eventually dull and when it does prepare for a LONG evening at the sharpening bench! Ellmax is almost impossible to sharpen without resorting to a powered belt sander.
6 hours it took me last time. And i only achieved about an 85% edge! Uugh! Its really good steel but perhaps a bit too good for most. Id gladly sacrifice a bit of performance for easier sharpenability. Ill call it very good.

Ive used this brute weekly for over a year now and now that the blade deployment issue is resolved, ive fallen back in love with it. Its extremely strong, smooth, capable, versatile and functional. Even comfortable especially while wearing gloves. I do highly recommend this knife but caution buyers to consider and understand the blade deployment issues you may or may not have with this knife. Aside from that potential issue this is still one hell of a tool and think it will serve you well.
5-stars,98/100 and highly recommended to the guys who need this type of capability and understand the difference.

I've wanted this knife for over a year and have handled a few before buying one. Generally I found them well made with great fit and finish.

That said, the one I received from Amazon had such a weak detent that the blade would fall free from the closed position with a gentle shake. As easy as this blade opens on its own, it is simply too dangerous to carry in your pocket or any where else for that matter.

Now, this seems to be an exception to the quality I've seen from ZT in the past but I'm amazed this one ever made it out of the factory.

I will likely buy another 0561 but I won't buy one sight unseen again. Overall, I think the knife design is very good but I'm very disappointed at the poor quality of the one I was sent.

This is the top of the ZT line right now, I think, and lots of people have it. I noticed a lot of complaints about a hard detente and sticking lockbar (during disengagement). My detente actually seems a little weak which makes the learning curve on opening/deployment rather lengthy. You don't flick it like a light switch, you push it like a button. With a strong detente you should be able to "load" enough energy to make it pop out, but with a weak detente you have to do the loading by changing direction, which is a little tougher to learn. I also found the lock bar a little sticky to disengage, so marked the tang with a sharpie and that seemed to fix the problem (at least until the sharpie mark wears off). Eventually it will get broken in and the sharpie trick won't be necessary.

Also, the G10 on the non-locking side overlaps the liner by quite a bit which makes getting at the lock bar to disengage pretty frustrating, but it's fairly easy to remove that extra material with sandpaper or a rasp. I don't think this has any effect on the warranty of anyone's worried about that. Blade stays centered very well and takes a nice egde, although was unevenly sharpened out of the box (shallower angle on one side than the other). The bearings are 'like buttah.'

Finally, it's missing the "second choil" that's on the Hinderer XM18s. I'm sure that's to provide more cutting area, but because of that the jimping on the flipper makes no sense. It's on the wrong side to help with opening. Perhaps they left it there in case people want to modify the blade by creating the extra choil, which is fairly easy to do with a drill press and some ceramic sticks to polish the edges.

This was my dream knife, and once I got it, I was, ultimately, disappointed. I loved Elmax steel, loved the way it looks, but I am simply not going to pay $225.00 for a knife with vertical blade play, even if it is only slight. Just to show you how much I wanted this knife, I sent it back and got another one, and guess what? Same issue. What a shame. Don't get me wrong, this knife will perform, but the lock is what concerns me. It seems solid, but when I put some pressure on the tip of the blade and made a downward motion, the play was there. Ultimately, the lock could disengage, and you don't want this knife's lock disengaging, because you're going to lose your fingers if it disengages with enough force. I'm heartbroken, but I think I better stick with Spyderco knives when it comes to paying a lot for knives, because you always get what you pay for. Next, I would like to get the Spyderco Sage 2. Still, I'm sad because I always wanted the ZT561, and if they ever get this issue fixed, then I will be back, but until then, call me a Spyderco fanboy if you want, but at least I get what I pay for.
