This works and sparked almost immediately. It's been a long time since I've seen a product, which goes WAY above and beyond; than just giving you what you've ordered. For me this is a FABULOUS product. The rod and striker goes together with a rubber washer to keep water, dust out. But that isn't why I love this. They have included a very compact, folded guide. An the title is a real gem, "So you're in a spot of trouble." A very personal message. It details information on determining direction, collecting water, snares/traps, knots, fire starting, shelter, signaling and a ruler in centimeter and inches. So much information so copy it, have spares and I really hope you do this. But No There's More - They've made little diagrams (but easy to read) - 'what position to take if a plane flies overhead, SOS and Alpine Rescue Signal - ON THE CASE. Oh and the lanyard is OK but I'm going to replace it with a weaved paracord; cause you can never have enough paracord. Anyway, I totally understand if it doesn't fit your needs or you're looking for something else. As you can expect, I definitely recommend this and will definitely purchase more.

Five years and I still got it
  • Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2013
This fire starting tool has so much going for it, and then just a couple of design features take a bit of that away. So you do not have to read through all the good, just to find the not so good let me put that out there first.

The 'water proof' end cap that seals the storage compartment does not have a locking mechanism, there is an "O" ring that provides the water barrier as well as the snug fit to keep the cap in place, and if there is a weakness in the overall design of this product that is it (not the fact the storage compartment is all but useless). The method to secure this end cap in place really needs a better approach such as a quarter to half twist lock along with the "O" ring. I believe this is necessary to ensure it stays in place, primarily because if you are hanging it by the lanyard instead of storing it away in a pocket, pouch, or other containment device - as it bounces up and down it can pull the cap off, and if the lanyard is not tied off you could loose the entire thing as you hike about and never notice it falling away. I do not hike along trails, I climb up and down rugged terrain and with all the bumping about I am sure not going to notice an item that weighs in at a few ounces falling away.

I do not subtract points for the storage compartment, as many have already stated it is very small. It comes with a cotton ball supplied, so they say. There is no way that is a full size cotton ball that I am used to, it is a ball, it is cotton, so they did not misrepresent that but is only the size of perhaps the finger nail on my little finger. I did not purchase this product for the storage compartment however, it is a nice touch but overall based on the size has no practical purpose. If you need tender to carry about with you I suggest using a length of jute twine, this, or paper can be wrapped around the fire rod and still allow the rod to fit it to the mating striking half of the device.

Now for the good - it works, it is rugged, it is fairly compact, did I mention it works? The black coating around the fire rod will need to be scraped through initially, the first few strokes produce little to no sparks at all until that is done, after that it is quite the light show with just tons of sparks. Some have mentioned the device could be smaller and lighter - I disagree. It is perfect and with the ridges on one half, and finger depressions on the other it provides for a firm hold. You will never appreciate being able to start a fire quickly until you are soaked to the bone and shaking from cold. Having something you can hold onto in this condition makes this device a winner, a keeper, and for me a must have.

The lanyard is paracord, a nice touch if you know the many uses it can have - the little survival booklet tells you none of that however, pity it was a perfect place to mention it for them. The length of the lanyard could definitely be longer, I have already adjusted a new longer one for my use, but again I did not purchase this product for the lanyard, it is a nice touch, and the holes for attaching one if you want to use it makes this a plus overall. Note: why use a lanyard to attach the two half's together? When your cold and shaking, it is dark, and the terrain is rough or downhill the last thing you want is to have the striker piece go flying out into space, a nice touch to keep this from happening.

The attached whistle on the lanyard is, so so. It makes for a nice noise maker to keep from surprising bears, as you hike along, and after maybe an hour of yelling or calling out and losing your voice it is a handy thing to have, I give it points in the plus column, but if you are planning on using it as a signaling device I would suggest getting a different one, such as those sold for boating, as the loudness and range of this whistle is not robust - period.

Would or will I purchase this device again if needed - YOU BETCHA, it fits in my hand, has some heft to it, and the ability to hold onto both pieces when using it is a must. I recommend this for the purpose to which it is intended, making sparks to start a fire. Carry better tender, replace the whistle, get a longer lanyard, but GET THIS for making sparks.

    [UPDATE]
My problems with the firesteel were in fact, due to my own lack of knowledge. The striker part of the firesteel will work just fine, it's the way you hold it that matters. The top part of the blade should be facing AWAY from you, not TOWARD you. If you hold it with the top facing away from you, then the striker will produce a very nice shower of sparks, which is great because I'm not quite sure what kind of long term damage would be done to a knife if you consistently use it to produce sparks, but it certainly looks like it would do some damage. Because it was my own fault I had problems, this product gets a 5 of 5 for being a flawless firesteel. I wish they'd include some tip like that with the product because new users obviously have problems with it judging from my original review and other reviewers. It's an excellent product, I would definitely recommend it. I've left my original review below so you can see what else is good about this product.

This is a decent firesteel, and my problem with it may be due to my own lack of skill with starting fires. First off, I like the build quality, everything feels solid and well put together. I also love the way it all snaps closed into a compact tube. The cotton inside the small storage space was perfect for starting a fire, and I'll be repacking it as soon as I get more cotton balls. The problem with it not producing sparks until you scrape off the black coating is minor, I used my knife and had it off and producing large showers of sparks in no time. This does, however, expose the big problem: the striker doesn't seem to want to produce sparks. Whether it's too dull, or I'm just using it wrong, I can't get it to spark using the striker. I can, however, get a huge shower of sparks when I use either of my knives. The whistle is neat, never know when you might need one, and I like both the pocket survival guide, and how the firesteel has useful signals printed on it. It's nice to have those, Gerber definitely hit a homerun there. The lanyard kind of ticks me off though because it seems to be twisted just due to the way the cap closes. Still, it's a good product, and if I had to buy it again knowing what I know about it now, I think I still would.

    Pienamente soddisfatto.

5.0 out of 5 stars Etwas teuer aber gut
Reviewed in Germany on January 12, 2012
SOS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Throws a Good Spark
Reviewed in Canada on January 16, 2014
It took me a little while to get the hang of it, but I finally got it. As you can see in the picture, the rod comes in two parts that seal together to get a waterproof container. I found that I couldn't get a very good strike with the paracord lanyard that comes with it. And one time while opening it, I accidentally tore the paracord out of the clamp thing and couldn't get it back through. I didn't think that was a big deal, since I didn't really like it there anyway.
The rod comes with an emergency whistle at the end of the paracord, and one end is a cap that contains a cotton ball for fire tinder, which is also waterproof. Since I accidentally tore the paracord out, I attached the whistle to the outside of my EDC bag.
Along the side of the rod are some pretty decent instructions for signalling for help, and some other useful stuff.
All in all, this ferrocerium rod is pretty good.

El diseño es compacto, el estuche resistente y estanco. El cordel cómodo y multiutilizable.
